59 deaths, highest for one day
The Oregon Health Authority reported 59 deaths from COVID-19 Thursday, the highest single-day reported death toll since the coronavirus pandemic began.
The death dates and counties of residence of those who died will be released Friday. Marion County reported 10 deaths on Wednesday, among the highest single-day reported deaths for the county.
The state also reported 1,453 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. Marion County accounted for 116 cases and Polk County reported 69.
Hospitals across the state are treating 699 people for COVID-19, including 173 in intensive care unit beds.
Adult ICU beds and non-ICU beds are at 93% capacity.
Most cases still among unvaccinated
More than 75% of cases that occurred in the past week were of unvaccinated people, the Oregon Health Authority announced Thursday in its weekly vaccine breakthrough report.
Between Sept. 26 and Oct. 2, the state tallied 10,411 new COVID-19 cases. Of those, 2,542 were vaccine breakthrough cases, about 24.4%.
The average age of a person involved in a breakthrough case was 46. There were 91 breakthrough cases in people between the ages of 12 and 17.
To date, 4.5% of all vaccine breakthrough cases have resulted in hospitalizations and 0.8% have died.
More than 2.75 million Oregonians have been vaccinated and 28,075 vaccine breakthrough cases have been identified.
